The rules of monogramming can be confusing, here are a few guidelines to help you make the best choice for your gifts:
For a single woman, the monogram should include her first, middle and last initial. The last name initial is larger than the first name or middle name.
Alexandra Leigh Rothschild would be:
ARL
For a married woman, the monogram should include her first, maiden and married initial if a married woman Uses her middle name instead of her maidedn name, you would use that initial instead. The last name is larger than the first or maiden name initials.
Alexandra Rothschild Smith would be:
ASR
For an engaged or married couple, the monogram should contain the bride's first initial, the surname of the couple and the groom's first initial. Some prefer the woman's initial first, some the man's. Either is correct according to etiquette sources.
Alexandra and Tom Smith would be:
AST or TSA
depending on your preference
For a man, there are a couple of options. Many people prefer to use the first, middle and last name initials in that order and the letters are all the same size.
John Brindle Rothschild would be:
JBR
However, it is also correct to use a man's surname initial in the middle (this is more common for young children than grown men), so
John Brindle Rothschild would be:
JRB
